Bluejay Men's Soccer Defeats Missouri State, 1-0
Springfield, Mo. -- Behind an unbelievable goal from senior Diego Gutierrez in the 78th minute of play, lifting the Creighton men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Missouri State on Thursday, November 18.
The win moved Creighton to 9-7-2 on the season, while Missouri State's season came to a close at 17-2-0.
A very even opening half saw the two defensive units control the flow of play. Creighton had the only shot on goal in the first 45 minutes, that coming in the fourth minute of play. The Bluejays held a 5-4 edge on shots in the first half.
The pace of play quickened in the second half as Missouri State fired off eight shots in the second, including six on goal.
Although the Bears increased their aggressiveness on offense, Creighton's back line held the line as senior goalkeeper Paul Kruse collected six saves and junior Jake Ashford added a defensive save as well.
While Creighton's defense held Missouri State at bay, Gutierrez lulled two Bear defenders to sleep with the ball in the right corner. With an opening only he was able to see, the Omaha native split a gap, then fired a crossing shot left to right that beat Missouri State goalkeeper Michael Creek with 77:08 showing on the clock.
"Since I was young, I always watched big soccer games," said Diego Gutierrez. "You just try to find new ways to make something happen. I worked on shots with difficult angles in practice, trying to make it difficult on the goalkeeper."
Creighton advances to face Tulsa on Sunday, November 21, with a 6:00 pm kick off.
