Volleyball Sweeps Marquette To Win Seventh BIG EAST Tournament Title in Eight Years

Creighton beats Marquette in final for fourth time in five seasons
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The No. 22 Creighton Volleyball team won its seventh BIG EAST Tournament in the last eight years with a 3-0 win at Marquette on Saturday, Nov. 27. Creighton's 13th straight win and school-record 30th of the season also clinches the program's 11th all-time NCAA Tournament bid.
Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.
Creighton's (30-3) defense set the tone early in the first set, combining for five blocks and 19 digs to limit Marquette to .061 hitting in a 25-20 victory. Annika Welty had four blocks and Kendra Wait three rejections while Norah Sis had four kills to pace the Bluejay offense.
Creighton rallied from a seven point deficit in the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Bluejays trailed by as much as 16-9 and were still down 18-12 until Kendra Wait unleashed a 9-0 serving run that moved CU in front, 21-18. Marquette got within one at 23-22 before a kill from Jaela Zimmerman and an ace by Abby Bottomley closed out the game.
Creighton fell behind 7-3 early in the third set before another rally. Ally Van Eekeren served a 3-0 run to put the Bluejays in front for good at 18-17 on a kill from Wait. After the teams traded sideouts, Wait started a 3-0 run of her own with an ace. The Jays would win the final four points of the match, earning the title on back-to-back-to-back kills by Zimmerman, Davis and Sis. That trio was responsible for 10 of CU's 12 kills in the final set and Welty had a hand in four of CU's six stuffs.
The BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, Sis led all players with 13 kills and added 11 digs for the double-double to also bring home Most Outstanding Player recognition. Also finishing with a double-double were All-BIG EAST choices Wait (24 assists, 12 digs) and Zimmerman (11 kills, 12 digs), with Sis, Wait and Zimmerman also earning spots on the All-Tournament Team. Welty had a career-high 10 blocks in the victory, as well. Creighton had 36 kills, five aces, 51 digs and 14 blocks on .147 hitting.
Marquette (26-5) was led by 12 kills from Savannah Rennie, and BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year Taylor Wolf added 18 assists, 14 digs and seven kills. The Golden Eagles hit .083 in the contest against CU's top-ranked defense and had 34 kills, four aces and eight rejections.
The Creighton Volleyball program will gather with its fans (and media) for Selection Sunday at D.J.'s Dugout (114th & Dodge) for the 7:30 p.m. show, which will air on ESPNU.

- Creighton set a school-record with its 30th win of the year, improving to 30-3 with its 13th straight victory.
- Creighton improved to 16-1 all-time in league tournament play as a top seed (14-1 in BIG EAST play).
- Creighton clinched its 10th straight NCAA Tournament bid, and 11th in program history (2010, 2012-2021).
- Creighton improved to 23-5 all-time against Marquette, and 19-2 since the start of the 2014 season.
- Creighton improved to 5-1 against the Golden Eagles in BIG EAST Tournament action, having also defeated MU in the 2015 semifinal (3-2), the 2017 final (3-2), the 2018 final (3-1) and the 2020 final (3-1).
- Creighton won its seventh BIG EAST Tournament title, having won five in a row from 2014-18, in addition to the 2020 crown. All of those titles have come under Kirsten Bernthal Booth.
- Marquette suffered its fifth straight loss in the title match, which includes also losses to Creighton in the finals of the 2017, 2018 and 2020 BIG EAST Championships.
- Creighton owns the national lead with 30 victories and 93 set victories and is in the top-five nationally with 12 road victories and 18 wins away from home.
- Seven-time champion Kirsten Bernthal Booth is one of two volleyball coaches in league history to win five or more BIG EAST Championship titles, joining former Notre Dame coach Debbie Brown (9). Booth is 15-2 in BIG EAST Championship action with seven titles. By comparison, the league's 10 other active coaches have a combined mark of 15-32 in the BIG EAST Championship with two titles.
- Creighton is now 15-2 all-time in nine BIG EAST Championship appearances, including a 7-1 mark in the finals.
- Creighton, Dayton and Western Kentucky are the only schools to win eight conference tournament titles since 2012.
- The Volleyball program is responsible for seven of the eight BIG EAST Tournament titles won by Creighton since joining the league in 2013. The Baseball team (in 2019) won the other one.
- The BIG EAST Championship has been won by the top seed nine of the last 10 years, and the No. 1 seed has also gone 19-1 in its last 20 matches in the event.
- Three of Marquette's five losses this season have come to Creighton.
