Creighton point guard hit buzzer-beater on Monday to beat SIU
OMAHA, Neb. -- For the third week in a row to start the season, Creighton point guard Ryan Nembhard has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
A native of Aurora, Ontario, Canada, Nembhard averaged 10.5 points, 5.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game to help Creighton to a 2-0 week.
Â
Nembhard started his week with 12 points, five assists and a season-high four steals vs. Southern Illinois. He delivered Creighton's first buzzer-beater since 2009 when he drove the length of the court in the final 5.2 seconds of a 66-64 win.
Â
He followed that with nine points, five assists and four rebounds in a win vs. SIU Edwardsville, helping Creighton overcome a 16-point deficit in the final 15 minutes of a 70-65 victory.
Nembhard's 91 points through seven games are the most by any Bluejay freshman since Doug McDermott had 106 points at that point in 2010-11 CU's other four freshmen since 1994-95 to score 75 or more points through seven games (Ryan Sears, P'Allen Stinnett, Justin Patton and McDermott) all went on to be named Conference Freshman of the Year.
Creighton (6-1) hosts North Dakota State (4-2) on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. Central in a game that will be nationally-televised on FS2.
