Milwaukee, Wis. -- A depleted Creighton women's basketball team will return to Omaha with three victories on its four-game road trip as the Bluejays fell at Marquette on Monday, Feb. 22, 65-41.
The loss moved Creighton to 7-9 on the season and 6-6 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette moved to 16-4 overall and 13-3 in conference play.
Early baskets from junior Chloe Dworak (three-pointer) and senior Temi Carda had Creighton within one at 6-5 as the opening quarter moved under five minutes. Looking for its first lead of the game, an errant pass turned into a layup for Marquette and started an 11-0 run for the Golden Eagles to close the first quarter.
Creighton's bench, particularly freshmen Morgan Maly and Jayme Horan, gave the Bluejays a lift in the second quarter. Reserves Maly, Horan and sophomore DeArica Pryor combined for 14 of Creighton's 17 points in the second quarter, helping Creighton win the column 17-15. The starting unit, however, were unable to contribute until freshman Emma Ronsiek hit a buzzer beating trey in the final minute to send Creighton into halftime down 33-22.
Another Marquette run in the third quarter pushed Creighton's deficit to 20 at 48-28 (2:42) to put the game away.
Ronsiek led the Bluejays with 10 points, while a combined 34 points from seniors Lauren Van Kluenen (20) and Selena Lott (14) paced Marquette. Despite the loss Creighton got a strong showing from Horan, with a career-high seven points in 11 minutes.
The road does not get easier for the Bluejays as they return home to face No. 1 Connecticut on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 4:00 pm, the game will be broadcast on SNY.
