Men's Basketball Duo Earn All-District Honors
3/16/2021 2:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Marcus Zegarowski and Denzel Mahoney honored
Junior guard Marcus Zegarowski was named to the United States Basketball Writers Association All-District VI Team, and also landed a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 5 First Team. It's his second year in a row of being honored by the NABC, having earned Second Team plaudits last season. Zegarowski leads Creighton in scoring and assists and was also named First Team All-BIG EAST.
This year marks the fifth straight season Creighton has had a player honored with USBWA All-District acclaim, as Marcus Foster was recognized in both 2016-17 and 2017-18 before Ty-Shon Alexander got the nod in 2018-19 and 2019-20. At the time, Foster was CU's first honoree by the USBWA since Doug McDermott won the Oscar Robertson Trophy as the USBWA National Player of the Year in 2013-14. McDermott was a three-time All-District selection and two-time District Player of the Year.
Senior guard/forward Denzel Mahoney was recognized on the NABC District 5 Second Team after also being named Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST. Mahoney has averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds game for the Bluejays in 2020-21. He leads CU with 39 steals and is fifth in the BIG EAST with 59 three-pointers made.
Ranked 19th nationally, Creighton (20-8) begins NCAA Tournament play on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. Central game vs. Big West champion UC Santa Barbara (22-4) in a game that will air on truTV.
