Diego Gutierrez tallied a pair of goals and an assist
The Bluejays improved to 3-1-0 in league action and moved into the top of the division standings with nine points, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1-2 during conference play (five points, fourth place).
Diego Gutierrez scored a goal during each half and added an assist on Creighton's first goal of the second half to tally five points in his second game at Morrison Stadium in a Bluejay uniform.
Gutierrez converted the first goal of the afternoon during the 31st minute. After a few passes near the center of the pitch, Alejandro Maillet played a ball towards the right side of the pitch where Gutierrez recovered the ball, outlasted a Butler defender and found the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Both Maillet and Callum Watson recorded assists on the play.
Butler tied the match at 1-1 during the closing moments of the first half with a goal from Tommy Visser in the 44th minute.
Creighton came out of the locker room with extra aggression and scored within the first two minutes of the second half. Mark O'Neill converted the go-ahead goal during the 47th minute for his first career goal as a Bluejay. Charles Auguste and Gutierrez played a combination along the right side of the 18-yard box before Gutierrez found the foot of O'Neill who was left unmarked near the end line and just in front of Butler's goalkeeper.
The Bluejays added to their lead with a goal during the 58th minute as Gutierrez converted a penalty kick for his second goal of the match and fourth of the season.
Butler trimmed Creighton's lead to a single goal in the 72nd minute as DJ Hooks found the back of the net after recovering a deflection by a Creighton defender in the box.
Duncan McGuire scored his first goal in a Creighton uniform during the 79th minute for the Bluejays' final goal of the match. Dominic Briggs placed a looping pass towards Creighton's attacking zone where McGuire beat a Bulldog defender to the ball and used his left foot to slot the ball inside near post.
Creighton entered Wednesday's contest with only five goals scored through five matches before finding the back of the net four times against the Bulldogs, the most by Bluejays during a 90-minute match since Oct. 14, 2017 against Xavier. Creighton owns six goals in two matches at Morrison Stadium this season, compared to only three away from Omaha in four matches.Â
Creighton returns to the pitch for a match on Saturday afternoon against No. 25 Marquette. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Golden Eagles is slated for 1 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
