Cincinnati, Ohio -- An early start worked to Creighton's advantage as the Bluejay women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Xavier on Thursday, March 25.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 2-4-0 on the season and 2-3-0 in BIG EAST play, while the defending BIG EAST champion Musketeers fell to 2-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in BIG EAST action.
Moved from a 12 pm (CT) start to 10 am yesterday, the match was moved again to an 8 am kickoff in an effort to avoid weather concerns. The early start appeared to favor the Bluejays as Creighton was the aggressor in the first half. Sophomore Skylar Heinrich fired the first shot of the match in the fourth minute, then junior Ansley Atkinson send a shot on frame that was stopped by Xavier's goalkeeper Olivia Jenkins in the 10th minute. The Bluejays kept the pressure on Xavier with another shot by Atkinson in the 16th minute.
Creighton broke through in the 26th minute as junior Cristina Garriga blasted a ball into the lower left corner from 25 yards away. Freshman Maddie Radke set the goal in motion, bringing the ball to the center of the pitch.
The match remained 1-0 into halftime, with Creighton holding an advantage of 5-2 in shots.
The script flipped in the second half as Xavier was far more aggressive than the Bluejays, out shooting Creighton 9-4 in the second half. In addition, the Musketeers created five corners in the second half alone.
Although Xavier was putting an emphasis on its offense, the Bluejays created a strong scoring chance midway through the second half. Heinrich got free along the left side of the pitch, getting a step ahead of the Xavier back line. In the 73rd minute Heinrich was taken down from behind by Xavier's Olivia Lawson. The result was a red card for Lawson at 72:31, putting Creighton up a player for the remainder of the match.
The Bluejays went on to claim the victory, the third time in Paule's six seasons Creighton has posted back-to-back BIG EAST wins.
In the match Xavier out shot Creighton 11-9 and held a 7-3 edge on corners.
Creighton remains on the road for a non-conference match on Sunday, March 28 as the Bluejays take on Iowa State in Ames, Iowa at 2:00 pm (CT).
