Women's Basketball Advances to the BIG EAST Quarterfinals with 56-42

Uncasville, Conn. -- Led by a career-high 26 points from senior Temi Carda, the Creighton women's basketball defeated Georgetown in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament 56-42 on Friday, March 5.
The win pushed Creighton to 8-10 on the season, while Georgetown's 2020-21 campaign came to a close at 2-15 on the year.
Creighton's first points in the contest came on a three-ball from freshman Emma Ronsiek, but the rest of the opening frame belonged to Carda. The Minnesota native delivered the Bluejays' remaining seven points in the opening stanza, but Creighton trailed 11-10 after one period.
In the second quarter Carda offered another seven points to outscore Georgetown herself 7-6. The Bluejays began to gain confidence watching their senior leader give everything she could to secure at least one more game. With 3:25 remaining in the first half freshman Morgan Maly connected from long range to put Creighton up 18-13. Another trifecta from Carda and two free throws by Maly sent the Bluejays to the locker room with a 23-17 edge.
Behind a pair of three-pointers from sophomore Carly Bachelor early in the third quarter, Creighton pushed its lead to 34-22 (6:20). Down 36-24 with 4:02 remaining in the frame, Georgetown rose to the moment. The Hoyas rattled off an 11-0 run to make it a 36-35 contest (1:08). Carda rallied her troops with a drive to the bucket, hitting one of two from the line to give Creighton a 37-35 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
Holding a 39-37 lead with 8:24 on the clock, the Bluejays seized control with a 9-2 run. The youngsters Maly and Ronsiek got Creighton going with a layup from Maly on a slip to the bucket and a pair of free throws by Ronsiek. Carda contributed a trey from the left wing, while Bachelor capped the surge with a driving layup to put Creighton up 48-39 (4:03).
Down the stretch the Bluejays pushed their lead to as much as 14 from the free-throw line, closing the contest 23-of-26 (88.5%) from the charity stripe.
Carda's 26 points led all scorers, while Bachelor finished with 13 points. Ronsiek just missed a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.
Georgetown got 11 points from Shanniah Wright to lead the way, while Jillian Archer and Kelsey Ransom each finished with 10 points.
With the win the sixth-seeded Bluejays advance to face No. 3 Seton Hall on Saturday, March 6 at 8:00 pm (CT).
