Providence, R.I. -- Trailing 1-0 early in the first half the Creighton women's soccer team played an excellent match in the BIG EAST Championships Semifinals, forcing overtime before falling to #10 Georgetown 2-1 on Friday, April 16.
The Bluejays season came to an end at 4-6-0, while Georgetown moved on to the BIG EAST Championship Final on Sunday at 10:00 am (ct).
The Hoyas claimed a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as Gia Vicari took a ball centered by Jenna Menta from the right edge of the pitch. Vicari punched the goal in from roughly 10 yards out.
Down 1-0 to a Georgetown team that had only allowed one goal in the 2020 season, Creighton rallied to out shoot the Hoyas in both the first and second halves.
Creighton's aggressive attack paid off in the 27th minute as sophomore Aida Kardovic finished her fourth goal of the season, sending a header from senior Keelie Fothergill into the back of the net from 15 yards out.
The Bluejays remained the aggressor in the second half, creating five shots and limiting Georgetown to just one.
The overtime lasted less than one minute as Georgetown played a ball along the left side into the box. The Hoyas attacked near the corner, forcing Creighton goalkeeper Keelan Terrell to dive towards the ball. Terrell collided with a Georgetown player, bringing about the penalty kick.
With the game on the line, Terrell dove correctly towards the left. Georgetown's Julia Leas' shot, however, soared into the upper right corner for the decision.
"I'm proud of our team, I thought we played well enough to beat one of the best teams in the country today," said head coach Ross Paule. "We're going to grow from this and be even better in the future."
