Creighton fires best round since at least 2003
FORT MYERS, FLA. -- The Creighton women's golf team stands in first place after the first round of the BIG EAST Championships Presented by JEEP, with sophomore Katie Allen alone in first place after tying her career-low with a one-under 71. Each of Creighton's top four golfers shot or tied their career-low scores on the 84 degree sun-splashed day in southwest Florida.
Creighton's 295 team score is the program's best 18-hole performance since at least 2003, and was 21 shots better than its previous low this spring. The Bluejays had never previously shot better than a 316 in six previous BIG EAST Championships.
Allen fired seven birdies and was the only golfer in the field of 30 to break par on Friday. It's the sophomore's third career round of par or better, and her 71Â matches her career-low first done on Sept. 10, 2019 at the MSU/Payne Stewart Invitational. Allen wasted no time racing to the top of the leaderboard, shooting birdies on the second, third and fourth holes and later ending her circuit with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. Allen is one of two Bluejays with experience in the BIG EAST Championships, having led all freshman at the 2019 event with a 10th place showing.
In third place after tying her career-low with a 73 is freshman Gabby Tremblay, which was two shots better than her season-best. Tremblay entered the day leading the Bluejays with a 79.58 stroke average and has paced the team in three of this spring's four tournaments. She birdied two of the first three holes, as well as No. 18.
Claire Orcutt tied for fifth place, tying her season-low with a 75. Orcutt used a birdie spree on No. 13, No. 15 and No. 16 helped her move to two-over down the stretch.
True freshman Katie Berrian tied for 11th place after a 76, three shots better than her previous best. She opened her BIG EAST Championships debut with seven consecutive pars and was still level after 12 holes.
Rounding out the Bluejay line-up on Friday was junior Margaret Hickey, who shot an 81 that was one shot behind her best showing of the spring. Her 11 pars were tied for the second-best mark on the team.
The tournament is being held at The Club at Gateway, which measures 6,072 yards and is a par 72 layout. Six BIG EAST schools participate in women's golf: Butler, Creighton, Georgetown, St. John's, Seton Hall and Xavier. Xavier's Morgan Tinsley is sandwiched between Allen and Tremblay after a 72, also helping the Musketeers to second place with a 300 that places the defending champions five shots behind CU. Seton Hall is one shot behind XU with a 301.
The second and third rounds of the tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday with groups teeing off at 7 a.m. Central. Live scoring for the event can be found at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=teamPlayer&tid=22428.
