College Park, Md. -- The Creighton Baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 4-2 win over Georgetown on Saturday, April 24. The last time the Bluejays had a double-digit winning streak was an 11-game stretch during the 2017 season (April 8-26).
The win pushed the Bluejays to 14-7 on the season and 6-0 in BIG EAST action, while Georgetown fell to 3-8 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
For the first time since March 27 (the first win in Creighton's 10-game stretch), the Bluejays trailed early in this contest. Georgetown plated a pair of runs in the third inning, the Hoyas first runs of the series. The Georgetown third began with a one-out walk. AJ Lotsis singled up the middle to put Hoyas at the corners. Andrew Ciufo plated the first run on an infield single, while the Hoyas' second run scored via an error.
The Bluejays answered quickly with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Creighton's response began with walks to sophomore Andrew Meggs and freshman Alan Roden. Senior Parker Upton worked a 2-1 count before blasting an RBI double to right. Down 2-1 senior Dax Roper knotted the game at 2-2 with an RBI ground out to shortstop.
The game remained tied at 2-2 into the top of the sixth, when Creighton seized the lead without a hit. Roden was hit by a pitch to open the inning by reliever Anthony Redfern. Upton followed with a walk, one out later senior Ryan Mantle reached on a slow hopper that was mishandled by Redfern to load the bases. An RBI walk to junior David Vilches chased Redfern, but the Bluejays took the 3-2 edge.
Georgetown's best chance to get even came in the seventh as a leadoff double chased Creighton starter Jonah Smith. Sophomore Paul Bergstrom worked out of the jam to keep the Bluejays' advantage.
Creighton added an insurance run in the ninth courtesy of a solo home run to center by senior Ryan Mantle.
Senior John Sakowski got the final five outs on just 15 pitches to earn his third save of the season. Smith nabbed the win (4-2), limiting Georgetown to two runs on five hits and one walk in six innings. The Bluejay hurler also collected eight strikeouts to highlight the outing.
Georgetown's Redfern took the loss (0-1), allowing one run on two walks and a hit batter in one-third of an inning.
