Mason, Ohio -- The Creighton Baseball season came to a close on Saturday, May 29 as the Bluejays fell to Xavier 2-1 in an elimination game in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Creighton took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as junior David Webel connected for a leadoff double and freshman Alan Roden laced an RBI double to right.
The Bluejays had a chance to add to its lead in the second as junior Garrett Gilbert blasted a double to left-center to open the second, but he was stranded at third.
Both of Xavier's runs came in the third as the Musketeers scored without the benefit of a hit. Bluejay starter, freshman Cade Lommel opened the inning with a walk and a hit batter. A wild pitch sent the Xavier runners to second and third, bringing head coach Ed Servais out from the dugout to make a change. Reliever Tommy Steier recorded the first out on a sacrifice fly, but a balk brought in the second run.
The Bluejay bats went silent from the Gilbert's double in the second until junior Will Hanafan doubled with two down in the seventh.
Creighton's last chance came in the ninth as senior Dax Roper walked, then Gilbert reached via an infield single with one down. That, however, was as far as the Bluejay runners went.
Lommel took the loss (3-3), allowing two runs on one hit in two innings of work. Xavier starter Ethan Bosacker limited the Bluejays to one run on five hits in seven innings for the win (4-3). Jonathan Kelly allowed one hit over the final two frames for his third save of the season.
