RIGA, LATVIA – Incoming Creighton freshman Ryan Nembhard's double-double helped Canada to a bronze medal at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in a 101-92 come-from-behind win vs. Serbia on Sunday in Latvia.
Nembhard had 21 points and a game-high 10 assists in 36 minutes of action, adding two steals and a rebound. He will finish as the lone player in the 16-team tournament to post multiple point/assist double-doubles. In seven games in Latvia, Nembhard averaged 15.1 points, 6.7 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He also shot 80 percent from the line (20-25) and 38.9 percent (14-36) from three-point range.
The bronze medal was just Canada's second ever at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup, joining a 2017 Gold Medal on a team starring current New York Knicks guard RJ Barrett.
Canada used an early 9-0 run to build an 11-6 lead and maintained a 33-22 lead after one quarter. Nembhard had six points and an assist in the first 10 minutes.
The Canadian lead grew to 37-22 early in the second quarter and stood at 47-34 before Serbia uncorked a 20-0 run to build a 54-47 lead. Nembhard would assist on a trey seconds before the buzzer to end the flurry, his fifth helper of the half, but Canada still trailed by four.
Nembhard added eight points, including three floaters in the lane, in the third quarter to help Canada rally from a 61-50 deficit to knot the score at 74 after three quarters.
Canada dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Serbia 27-18, to earn the bronze medal. As he did throughout the tournament, Nembhard made key plays down the stretch with seven points and three assists in the final quarter including a dagger three-pointer in transition with 2:43 left that gave Canada a 97-84 lead.
Arizona's Bennedict Mathurin made all 11 of his two-point shots and scored a game-high 31 points to pace Canada, while Purdue's Zach Edey also contributed his tournament-leading sixth double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Canada shot 54.9 percent for the game (39-71) despite just 3-of-18 marksmanship from three-point range.
Serbia was led by 25 points from Mihailo Musikic.
Up next today in Latvia, the United States (6-0) will play France (5-1) at 11 a.m. Central in the Gold Medal game on ESPN+. Nembhard's Creighton teammate, Ryan Kalkbrenner, plays for the American squad.
