Incoming freshman looks to help Uganda
OMAHA, Neb. -- Incoming Creighton men's basketball freshman Arthur Kaluma will play for Uganda next week in an AfroBasket 2021 qualifier. The AfroBasket 2021 qualifier helps decide the teams for the 2021 FIBA Africa Championship, which takes place from August 24 - September 5 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Uganda visits Morocco at 1 p.m. Central on Thursday, July 8, in a game that will air on ESPN+ as well as http://LiveBasketball.tv. Uganda can qualify for the 2021 FIBA Africa Championship with a win vs. either Morocco (July 8), while a loss would lead to Uganda visiting Cape Verde for a game on July 15 for the final spot in the field. Reports also indicate a Uganda loss to Morocco by less than four points would also advance the Uganda squad.
In November, Uganda hosted a 94-90 win vs. Morocco and a 101-98 victory vs. Cape Verde, though Kaluma did not play in either contest. Uganda is ranked 98th in the FIBA World Rankings, just behind Cape Verde (95) and Morocco (69).
In an interview with Ugandan newspaper Daily Monitor when Kaluma was added to the roster in February, Uganda assistant coach Mandy Juruni was focused on how the 6-foot-8 forward could help. "We think he'll help us a lot on the rebounds. All three games that we played we lost rebounds by double digits. It's very hard at that level not to be a good rebounding team,"
Kaluma is one of three current Bluejays who are competing internationally this summer, joining Ryan Nembhard and Ryan Kalkbrenner. Nembhard (Canada) and Kalkbrenner (United States) are both competing in the 2021 FIBAÂ U19 World Cup, which starts Saturday in Latvia.
A four-star prospect, Kaluma signed a national letter-of-intent with Creighton in May. He played last season at Dream City Christian High School in Glendale, Ariz., and at No. 46 is the highest-ranked Creighton recruit in the history of the ESPN database, which dates to 2007. He selected Creighton over a list of schools that included Arizona, Western Kentucky and Syracuse.
