Matthew Lanahan Claims Crown at ITA Summer Circuit Event in San Diego

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's tennis rising sophomore Matthew Lanahan earned the championship at the 2021 ITA Summer Circuit at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego on Monday.

Lanahan -- the No. 2 seed for the tournament -- won four matches over three days (July 17-19) to claim the title. The Chula Vista, California native earned a three-set win in the finals match against Jared Thompkins on Monday. Lanahan fell 6-4 in the opening set before tying the match with a 6-3 victory in the second frame. The Bluejay won a 10-point tiebreaker in the deciding set, 10-6, to secure the championship. The title match proved to be the first bit of adversity for Lanahan as he did not drop a set prior to the finals matchup.

Lanahan posted a team-high nine wins in doubles action and five singles victories during his first year as a Bluejay in the spring of 2021. He played in 10 matches at the No. 2 singles position in Creighton's lineup and three at No. 3.
