Seniors Lead Cross Country Teams in Lincoln at Woody Greeno Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Seniors John Quigley and Danielle Hotalling led the Creighton cross country teams on Saturday at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Cross Country Invitational in Lincoln.
Quigley was Creighton's top finisher for the third straight competition dating to last season, placing 24th with a time of 24:59.5 on the 8K Mahoney Park Golf Course layout.
Sophomore Marcos Gonzalez (25:23.2) took 33rd while freshman Ryan Montera made his Bluejay debut with a 38th-place finish of 25:31.6.
Jack Larsen finished 50th with a time of 25:48.3. Three more Bluejays ran as a pack and finished 60th, 61st and 62nd. Henry Slagle was 60th in a time of 26:03.2, just ahead of Danny Bohnemann (61st; 26:07.0) and Boston Small (62nd; 26:07.4).
Wichita State had five runners in the top-10 of the Red Division to win the men's race with a team score of 27 and easily outdistance runner-up Air Force's 77 points. Iowa Western's Nicholas Kiprotich won the individual title with a time of 24:00.4, five seconds better than Iowa Central's Kelvin Bungei (24:05.1). There were 237 entrants in the men's race overall. Creighton finished fifth on the men's side among the seven Division I teams that participated.
Hotalling led Creighton with a fifth-place finish as the senior covered the 5K course in a time of 17:33.7. It was the 16th time in as many collegiate starts that she's been Creighton's top finisher, and her sixth overall top-five showing.
Marguerite Hendrickson was CU's second-fastest women's performer on Saturday, as she crossed the tape in 18:22.3 to place 25th, while Caroline Colburn was 37th with a clocking of 18:34.2.
Rounding out the Bluejay scoring contingent were freshman Abby Parker (18:53.5) and junior Ashley Riley (18:54.3), who took 52nd and 53rd place, respectively.
Iowa won the women's Red Division team title with 38 points, edging Nebraska (41) thanks to placing six runners in the top-12. The women's race featured 213 runners and was won by Iowa Western's Mercy Biwott in a time of 16:57.0, which was 10 seconds ahead of Nebraska's Erika Freyhof. The Bluejay women placed sixth of seven Division I teams in the event.
Creighton returns to the course on Friday, Oct. 1, for the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Mo.
