Bluejays set records for lowest 18-hole score, 54-hole score and best individual 54-hole score
COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho -- The Creighton women's golf team opened its 2021-22 season in record-setting fashion as the Bluejays finished in seventh place at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Creighton's third round total of 292 was the program's best on file in school history (since 2003-04), eclipsing the previous mark of 295 set on April of 2021 at the BIG EAST Championship and then matched in Monday's second round. Creighton's 889 total was also the first time the program has broken 900 in any event. In addition, both Katie Allen (217) and Katherine Lemke (218) broke Allen's previous CU record for a 54-hole event of 220.
Allen strung together rounds of 74, 73 and 70 to tie for seventh place in the field of 93 competitors. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz., fired a final-round 70 that was the best score of her collegiate career, and program-record fourth round of par or better in her career. Her 217 total broke her own Bluejay mark for a 54-hole event that was originally done at the Red Rocks Invitational in March of 2019.
Lemke's 218 also broke Allen's previous CU record and most impressively, came in the freshman's collegiate debut. The Geneva, Ill., product had rounds of 76, 73 and 69 to tie for 10th place overall. Lemke's 69 was one shot behind Sarah Eversman's school-record 68 for any round that has stood since 2016. She's also the first Bluejay since Leigh Sutton in 2005 to shoot a round of par or better at any point during her freshman campaign.
Lemke wasn't the only Creighton freshman to shine in her debut, as classmate Eleanor Hudepohl compiled scores of 74, 75 and 80 to finish with a 229 total that was good for a tie for 54th place. Her opening-round 74 stands as the best debut loop by a Bluejay rookie on record.
Sophomore Katie Berrian shook off a first-round 82 to put together back-to-back rounds of 74 and 73, tying Hudepohl for 54th place. Berrian's previous best round in a Bluejay uniform had been a 76.
Sophomore Gabby Tremblay finished the tournament in 87th place following scores of 78, 79 and 83 for a 240 aggregate. Tremblay now owns 21-of-35 career rounds in the 70s.
Competing as an individual and not counting towards CU's team score was sophomore Claire Orcutt. The Mankato, Minn., product started with rounds of 82 and 85 before closing with a 77 that ranks as the third-best round of her collegiate career.
Hawai'i won the 17-team tournament with an 872 total, one shot better than Sacramento State, to claim its second straight tournament of the fall. Rainbow Wahine freshman Momo Sugiyama closed with a 3-under 68 to capture medalist honors at 1-under 212. Oral Roberts' Kiana Oshiro was one shot back at 213. The tournament was held at Coeur d'Alene Resort in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and measured 6,051 yards on the par-71 layout.
After travelling all the way to Idaho to open the fall, Creighton won't have to leave Douglas County for its next two events. First among those is the Stampede at the Creek that will be hosted at The Club at Indian Creek in Elkhorn, Neb., on Oct. 4-5.
