Head Coach Jim Flanery Begins 20th Season at the Helm
Omaha, Neb. -- The 2021-22 season began in typical Bluejay style as members of the Creighton women's basketball team screamed and sang for head coach Jim Flanery as he entered the Ruth Scott Training Center. Flan responded his playfully shocked look, then proceeded to dance in celebration as his team offered him balloons and cupcakes to commemorate the official beginning of his 20th season as head coach on Wednesday, September 29th.
"Flan's ability to have fun with us as a team is great, whether its before a game or for his 20th year celebration it keeps things fun," said junior Carly Bachelor. "Flan has a very reflective mindset, he has an ability to see us for who we are outside the sport which helps everyone stay connected."
"Part of Flan's longevity is his ability to adapt with the times," said assistant coach Jordann Reese. "He trusts his staff enough to lean on them at times which allows him to continue to evolve and improve."
After a few moments of joyous laughter, the team got down to work with stretching and loosening up for practice.
"I've been extremely lucky to come to work at the same place for as long as I have," noted Flanery. "One of the great things about Creighton and the nuances about coaching is it has changed enough over the year that it remains enjoyable every day,"
Building upon the shortened 2019-20 season that saw the Bluejays win three of their final five to reach the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament and the second round of the WNIT. The 2020-21 squad is primed to return to the post season once more, aiming for another trip to the Big Dance. Since cracking the glass for Flanery in 2011-12, Creighton has reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2011-12, 2012-13, 2016-17 and 2017-18) in nine opportunities (2019-20's postseason was cut short by COVID-19).
With 10 returners and two newcomers on the roster for 2021-22, Creighton biggest loss from last season is leading scorer Temi Carda (345 points, 15.6 ppg). Back to lead the Bluejays are fifth-year point guard Tatum Rembao (9.9 ppg and 3.7 apg) as well as sophomore post Emma Ronsiek (11.6 ppg and 5.1 rpg). Ronsiek was a BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selection in 2020-21.
