Bluejay outscore DePaul 37-15 after halftime
OMAHA, Neb. -- Trailing 38-28 with 15:46 remaining in the second half the Creighton men's basketball team flipped the game with a 23-2 run as the Bluejays earned a 60-47 victory on Saturday, Jan. 22.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul fell to 10-8 on the season and 1-7 in conference action. Creighton has now beaten the Blue Demons 15 straight times.
Sophomore Ryan Kalkbrenner ignited a 17-0 run for Creighton with a traditional three-point play. Following a layup by freshman Arthur Kaluma, Kalkbrenner threw down a dunk to force DePaul head coach Tony Stubblefield to use a timeout at 38-35 (13:07). The Bluejay momentum, however, raged forward getting three of four free throws by freshman Trey Alexander and seven points from senior Ryan Hawkins on a dunk, a layup and a three-pointer to punctuate the run by putting the Bluejays up 45-38 with 9:00 remaining. CU held DePaul to 0-of-8 shooting and six turnovers during the drought.
A bucket from DePaul's Javan Johnson broke up Creighton's run, but the Bluejays poured in the next six on field goals from freshman Ryan Nembhard, Alexander and Hawkins to build a 51-40 advantage with 3:32 remaining.
Over the final 15:46 Creighton shot 11-of-19 from the field (57.9%), while limiting DePaul to just 2-for-17 (11.8%).
The first half saw the Bluejays jump out to an early 13-9 lead (13:16) behind six points from senior Alex O'Connell, but a 17-4 run by DePaul gave the Blue Demons a 26-17 advantage with 4:17 left. DePaul went on to take a 32-23 lead into the locker room at the half.
Three Bluejays closed the contest in double-digits, getting a game-high 18 points from Kalkbrenner. Alexander had a career-high 12 points and Hawkins finished with 11 points. CU shot 38.2 percent for the game and just 17.6 percent from downtown, but did make 15-of-18 free throws (83.3 percent). The Bluejays won the rebound battle 42-31, while both teams swatted seven shots.
DePaul got a team-high 12 points from Oregon transfer Jalen Terry in the loss. DePaul played without Javon Freeman-Liberty (21.1 ppg., 7.4 rpg.) and held David Jones (16.2 ppg.) to nine points on 4-of-14 shooting.
