Norah Sis and Kendra Wait each post double-doubles
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The No. 18 Creighton Volleyball team reached the midpoint of BIG EAST play with a 3-0 win at Villanova on Friday night, its 20th straight regular-season win in conference action.
Scores of the match in favor of CU were 25-22, 25-12, 25-18 as the Bluejays improved to 17-3 overall to tie its best start in program history through 20 matches. CU is 9-0 in BIG EAST play for the fifth time in the past eight seasons. Villanova, which handed CU its first league loss in 2015 and 2019, fell to 6-15 this fall and is 2-7 in BIG EAST matches.
"Villanova's a tough place to play. It's a really loud gym and I think it's an easy place to get rattled, but I thought overall we did a good job handling that," said Creighton coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "They made a big run in game one, and a little run in game two but overall we really wanted the team focused on defense this week, especially early in the match. I feel like we've started slow and I thought we really did a nice job in that aspect of the game."
Sophomore Kendra Wait carried Creighton to a 25-22 set one victory with 11 assists, nine digs and a block in the set. Classmate Norah Sis added seven kills and Kiana Schmitt finished off the first frame with her fourth kill of the match. The Bluejays opened the match with a 10-4 run and led 17-11 before Nova rallied to within one at 20-19. The host Wildcats got no closer.
Creighton never trailed in the second set, rolling to a 25-12 victory behind .440 hitting. Keeley Davis had five kills in six swings and helped hold Nova to -.032 hitting.
The Bluejays also led wire-to-wire in the third set to improve to 18-3 all-time against the Wildcats. Ava Martin, Jazz Schmidt and Kiana Schmitt each had four kills as the Bluejay offense collected 19 kills in the final game. Both Norah Sis and Allison Whitten upped six digs for the CU defense.
Wait (35 assists, 13 digs) and classmate Norah Sis (12 kills, 15 digs) both had double-doubles in the victory, while Schmitt recorded her third straight match with double-figure kills with 10 on .471 hitting. Allison Whitten added 14 digs and a rare kill in the Bluejay romp. CU hit .294 and had 48 kills, five aces, 51 digs and four kills.
Villanova got six kills each from Kiera Booth and Tara Garvey as the Wildcats were held to .091 hitting. Taryn Whittingham topped the Nova defense with 11 digs. The Wildcats had 26 kills, 37 digs and six blocks but did not record an ace.
