Jays improve to 18-3 overall and are 10-0 in league play
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The No. 18 Creighton Volleyball team won its 10th consecutive match with a 3-0 triumph at Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 22.
Scores of the sweep were 25-13, 25-12, 25-20. as the Bluejays improved to 18-3 (10-0 BIG EAST) and retained its one-game lead in the standings ahead of No. 19 Marquette. Georgetown dropped to 4-17 overall and is 2-8 in BIG EAST play.
"I think anytime you can get a road sweep that's a good thing, and we had an opportunity to put a lot of players in, so that was good." said head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth.
After surrendering the first three points of the match, junior defensive specialist Ellie Bolton served up two aces during a 10-0 serving run that featured four blocks by Kiara Reinhardt. The Jays didn't look back from there, rolling to the 25-13 victory. Creighton hit .474 in the opening set and held the Hoyas to -.042 hitting. Bolton served up three of CU's five aces in the lopsided triumph.
Creighton led wire-to-wire in the second set, hitting .436 to post a 25-12 victory. Norah Sis had eight kills and three digs in the second frame and Kiana Schmitt added five kills and a block.
The dominance continued in the third set as Creighton completed its fifth straight sweep over the Hoyas. Creighton led by as much as 21-14 before GU closed within two at 22-20, but a Bluejay timeout helped get the visitors back on track. Katie Maser checked in to serve match point, and a block by Bethany Clapp and Abbey Milner ended the contest. Jazz Schmidt had four kills in as many swings for CU in the third set.
Sis led all players with 16 kills and hit .433, and Schmitt hit .467 and had nine kills in 15 swings. Kendra Wait dished 34 assists and Allison Whitten dug 13 balls. Bolton had three of CU's eight aces on the day for a Bluejay squad that tallied 44 kills, seven blocks and 39 digs on .378 hitting.
After the match, Booth praised the emergence of Schmitt as an offensive weapon. "It's big. A lot of teams scheme and release to the outside so if they do that, we need someone who can put the ball down, especially 1-on-1. Kiana does that at a really high rate and it makes us much more difficult to scout."
Mary Grace Goyena had 10 of Georgetown's 25 kills on the evening, and Karis Park notched a team-leading 10 digs. The Hoyas had 25 kills, four aces, 27 digs and four blocks on .082 hitting.
Creighton returns to the road next weekend with another trip to the East Coast. The Bluejays meet Seton Hall on Friday at 5 p.m. CST before visiting St. John's on Sunday at 1 p.m. CST.
