Springfield, Mass. (Oct. 27, 2022) — The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Creighton's Arthur Kaluma is one of 20 candidates on the watch list for the 2023 Karl Malone Award.
Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its ninth year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
"The Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to annually recognize the best power forwards in the collegiate game with the Karl Malone Award, which bears the name of one of the greatest players of all time," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "To be named to the watch list of the Karl Malone Award is a great honor and I know he values the opportunity to watch these players compete throughout the season. We are honored to have his unique perspective in our evaluation each year."
A sophomore from Glendale, Ariz., Kaluma is a Preseason Second Team All-BIG EAST choice after averaging 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game en route to All-BIG EAST Freshman Team accolades in his debut campaign. He was a two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and landed on the BIG EAST's All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in the event. He closed his freshman season with career-highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes in a Second Round loss to eventual national champion Kansas in the NCAA Tournament.
Kaluma is Creighton's first player in the nine seasons of the Karl Malone Award to be named to the watch list at any point.
