Boyds, Md. – Powered by four goals from the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, junior Duncan McGuire, the sixth-seeded Creighton men's soccer team delivered a thrilling 6-0 win over second-seeded Seton Hall during the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep on Thursday, November 10 at the Maryland Soccerplex.
With the victory, the Bluejays advance to the BIG EAST Championship match for the first time since 2016 and the top-seed Georgetown on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. CT. The Hoyas posted a 2-1 victory over Butler in double overtime to earn a spot in the BIG EAST Championship.
Creighton improved to 8-4-6 on the year with the win, while Seton Hall fell to 7-3-7 overall.
Locked into a physical battle early, the Bluejays took advantage of a Seton Hall foul inside the box in the 35thminute to take a 1-0 lead. Playing a looping cross into the 18-yard box, senior Callum Watson charged in and drew a foul to earn the Bluejays a penalty kick.
McGuire, the NCAA leader for goals scored, stepped up to the circle for the eighth time this season and buried his seventh PK of the year, giving Creighton a 1-0 lead at the break.
Coming out of the locker room with tons of energy, McGuire quickly extended the Bluejays lead with his second goal of the afternoon in the 47th minute (46:21). A costly turnover by the Pirates lead to a one-on-four opportunity for McGuire. A few moves to the left later, McGuire fired a shot through the legs of a Seton Hall defender and past the diving goalkeeper to push the Jays out in front 2-0.
Ten minutes later, McGuire earned his second hat-trick of the season by redirecting a cross into the six-yard box from sophomore Jackson Castro, giving Creighton a 3-0 advantage in the 57th minute of play.
Just over three minutes later in the 60th minute (59:37), McGuire became just the eighth player in school history and the first Bluejays since Riggs Lennon in 2016 to score four goals in a single match. McGuire delivered his nation leading 18th goal of the season on a header off a corner kick from Castro. The four goals also tied a BIG EAST Tournament record for most goals scored in a match.
The Bluejays scoring barrage continued in the 62nd minute as sophomore Giorgio Probo connected with Castro for his ninth goal of the season. Probo lofted a pass over the top of the Pirates backline setting Probo up with a one-on-one opportunity with Seton Hall's goalkeeper Hannees Ronnholmen. Castro collected the pass and blasted a shot into the back of the net giving Creighton a 5-0 lead.
Creighton tacked on an addition goal in the 77th minute (76:55) from sophomore Mark O'Neill to secure the victory for the Bluejays.
Seton Hall ended the match with a 10-8 edge in shots, while Creighton held an 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper collected one save, smothering the only Pirate shot on goal in the match.
With the six goals scored on Thursday, Creighton has now scored 50 goals on the season, which leads all of Division I this season. Since 2000, the Bluejays have scored at least 50 goals in a season four times (2000, 2002, 2015, 2022), with the three other teams reaching the NCAA Tournament.
