Morgan Maly led Creighton with 21 points and 10 rebounds
Vermillion, S.D. -- Guided by a 19-0 run over the final 7:59 of the second quarter, the 21st ranked Creighton women's basketball team defeated South Dakota 74-51 on Thursday, November 10 to open the season 2-0.
The loss dropped the Coyotes to 1-1 on the season.
After trading buckets on the first four possessions of the game, things turned in the Coyotes favor as Creighton shot just 5-of-22 in the opening frame and trailed 19-12 after one quarter.
Down 22-14 with 7:59 remaining in the second, the Bluejays locked down South Dakota on the defensive end and began to chip away. Offensively it was the Bluejay bench that got things going. Junior Jayme Horan (Omaha, Neb.) grabbed an offense board, then delivered a bucket in the paint to get things started. Junior Lauren Jensen (Lakeville, Minn.) followed with a pull-up jumper, while Mallory Brake (Hastings, Minn.) followed with a fast break layup to get the Bluejays within two at 22-20 (5:43).
Junior Molly Mogensen (Farmington, Minn.) converted another pull-up to knot the game, then Jensen and junior Morgan Maly (Crete, Neb.) connected quickly with a driving layup and a three-pointer to give Creighton a 27-22 edge (3:16). Before the break the Bluejays got buckets from Jensen, senior Rachael Saunders (Iowa City, Iowa) and a pair of free throws from Mogensen to take a 33-22 lead into the locker room.
An early surge by South Dakota to open the second half made it a 33-27 contest (8:16), however a three-ball from Mogensen and a traditional three-point play from Maly ended things quickly. Creighton's lead did not fall under digits the rest of the way, growing as large as 25 (72-47) with 3:11 remaining in the game.
Maly led all scorers with 21 points, also collecting 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Three other Bluejays finished in double figures as Mogensen delivered 16 points, while Jensen and senior Carly Bachelor (Topeka, Kan.) each finished with 12.
South Dakota got a team-high 20 points from Grace Larkins, including 10 in the opening quarter.
