Kalkbrenner & Nembhard Shine As #10 Men's Basketball Rolls To 94-65 Win Over Holy Cross

Kalkbrenner shoots 10-for-10 while Nembhard dishes 12 assists
OMAHA, Neb. -- Ryan Kalkbrenner shot 10-for-10 from the field and Ryan Nembhard dished 12 assists without a turnover to lead No. 10 Creighton to a 94-65 win over Holy Cross on Monday, Nov. 14.
The win moved the Bluejays to 3-0 on the season, while Holy Cross fell to 1-2.
Creighton took control from the opening tip as the Bluejays rattled off eight straight points in two minutes, including three dunks by Kalkbrenner. A layup and two more dunks from Kalkbrenner in the first eight minutes forced Holy Cross to change its defensive strategy. Moving to a zone defense, the Crusaders allowed Creighton to pick them apart from beyond the arc, closing the game with 12 three-pointers from eight different players. Before halftime Kalkbrenner even connected from beyond the arc for his first trey of the season.
At the half the Bluejays held a 52-27 advantage and extended the lead to as much as 34 at 67-33 (14:29), allowing head coach Greg McDermott to spread the minutes around in the second half. Freshman Ben Shtolzberg took full advantage as the California native posted a career-high 13 points, all in the second half.
Kalkbrenner's 22 points led all scorers, while Arthur Kaluma and Shtolzberg each finished with 13 points for Creighton. CU shot 57.8 percent from the field, which help offset an 8-for-17 night (47.1 percent) at the line. CU finished with eight dunks and had 28 assists against just nine turnovers, as Nembhard's 12 helpers directly led to 28 points. The Bluejays won the rebound battle 42-27 and outscored the Crusaders 46-26 in the paint.
Holy Cross got 21 points from Bo Montgomery to lead the Crusaders. Holy Cross shot 40.3 percent from the field overall and made 8-of-17 three-point tries.
Creighton returns to the court on Thursday, November 17 as the Bluejays host UC Riverside at 7:30 p.m. at CHI Health Center Omaha. The game will be televised on FS1 and can be heard on 1620 The Zone and 101.9 The Keg.
