Creighton hosts BIG EAST Championships starting on Wednesday with first-round matchups
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – No. 16 Marquette earned a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title with No. 11 Creighton Volleyball as the Golden Eagles swept the Bluejays (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday night in Milwaukee, Wis.
Suffering their first loss in BIG EAST play, Creighton falls to 25-4 on the year and 17-1 in conference action, while Marquette improves to 25-2 overall and 17-1 in league play.
Sophomore Norah Sis had a match-high 16 kills and seniors Kiana Schmitt and Jazz Schmidt each added eight kills, while sophomore setter Kendra Wait recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 33 assists and a team-high tying 10 digs. Creighton finished the match with 40 kills, 53 digs and five blocks on .219 hitting.
Marquette was led by 11 kills and 13 digs from Jenna Reitsma. Setter Yadhira Anchante recorded a double-double of her own with 34 assists and 12 digs while Carly Skrabak also collected 12 digs on the backrow. As a team, the Golden Eagles had 44 kills, 57 digs, nine aces, five blocks and hit .274.
Creighton fell behind 8-5 and still trailed 16-12 midway through the opening frame before back-to-back kills from Schmidt and a double block from Schmitt and Schmidt forced a Golden Eagles timeout as the Bluejays pulled to within one at 16-15. Out of the timeout, Marquette scored seven of the next eight points to hold a 23-15 advantage. The Bluejays continued to fight as Schmitt and Sis blasted home kills and Wait skyed for a solo block to make the score 23-19, but a kill from Marquette's Hattie Bray and a Bluejay attack error gave Marquette set one, 25-19.
With the Bluejays holding an early 4-2 lead in set two, Marquette took advantage of a few miscues by the Bluejays and sparked a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead on a kill from Bray. Creighton would battle back to even the set up at 10-10 with a second solo block from Wait and again at 16-16 but another 5-1 spurt from Marquette pushed them out in front for good as the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the break.
The third set was the tightest of the night as Creighton led 10-9 after the 11th kill of the night from Sis. Marquette then sparked a 5-1 run on a pair of kills from Ella Foti to grab a 14-11 lead and force another Creighton timeout. The Golden Eagles would push their lead out to as much as six at 21-16 before a trio of kills from Sis and a block from Martin and Schmitt closed the deficit to 23-20. Marquette, however, would seal the sweep with a kill from Reitsma, earning just their third win over the Bluejays since the start of the 2014 season and the No. 1 seed in next week's BIG EAST Championships.
With the loss and certain tiebreakers, Creighton will be the No. 2 seed in next week's BIG EAST championship. The Bluejays, however, have earned a first-round bye and will be back in action on Friday, November 25 at 7 p.m. inside D.J. Sokol Arena.
