Men’s Tennis Claims 6-1 Victory Over UIC

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team picked up a 6-1 win over UIC on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.

Creighton improves to 3-4 on the year with their second straight win, while the Flames fall to 1-7.

Casey Ross and Matthew Lanahan got the Bluejays started right out of the gate with a 6-1 win at the top doubles slot before Shin Inoue and Zack Maline clinched the doubles point for the Jays with a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 doubles position. Stratton Brown and Jose Oscar Diaz also earned a 7-6 triumph at the No. 2 doubles slot.

Creighton continued their dominate performance with four straight-sets victories during singles play.

Inoue claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 3 singles position to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. Ross extended that advantage with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at the top slot before Ethan Neil clinched the match for the Bluejays with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 6 singles position.

UIC claimed the lone win at the No. 2 position but Creighton closed out the match with wins at the No. 5 and No. 4 singles slot for a 6-1 dual win.

Diaz earned a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the No. 5 slot before Lanahan delivered a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 11-9 win at the No. 4 singles position.

"We played very well at a few spots and were able to get leads early," said head coach Tom Lilly. "UIC fought back and were able to make some runs but we played well enough to take the match. Looking forward to another tough one tomorrow."

Creighton returns to the court tomorrow afternoon for a match against Chicago State. First serve between the Bluejays and the Cougars is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Courts.
