Bluejays will host Butler on Tuesday night
NEWARK, N.J. -- Creighton fell behind 11-0 in the opening minutes and never led in a 74-55 loss at Seton Hall on Friday, Feb. 4. The Bluejays, who overcame a 16 point deficit in the second half last season in Newark, were unable to recapture the magic to pull out another comeback victory over the Pirates.
Seton Hall improved to 14-7 on the season and 5-6 in BIG EAST play. The Bluejays fell to 13-8 and are 5-5 at the midpoint of league action.
Seton Hall scored the first 11 points of the game after a jumper from Jared Rhoden and three-pointers by Myles Cale, Tray Jackson and Kadary Richmond. The Bluejays wouldn't crack the scoring column until a Ryan Kalkbrenner free throw at the 17:03 mark. The Pirates extended their lead to 23-3 before an Arthur Kaluma hoop snapped a streak of more than seven minutes without a point for the Bluejays. Creighton shot just 3-for-23 in the first 16 minutes before finishing the half making four of its final five tries. The Bluejays shot just 25 percent in the first half and 1-for-11 from three-point range to find themselves trailing 37-16 at the break. Seton Hall was led by 10 points off the bench from Jamir Harris.
The Bluejays made a push on the offensive end early in the second half, getting back-to-back three-pointers from Ryan Nembhard and Alex O'Connell to force a Seton Hall timeout at the 13:37 mark with SHU leading 45-30. O'Connell added a breakaway dunk 36 seconds later to cut the deficit to 13 (45-32), but would get no closer.
O'Connell had 10 of his 12 points after halftime in addition to seven rebounds, while Nembhard finished with 11 points and five assists for the Bluejays. CU ended the game shooting just 5-of-22 from three-point range.
The Pirates had five players score in double-figures, led by 14 from Richmond and 13 by Harris. the Pirates made 10-of-21 three-pointers and won the rebound battle, 35-34. The Pirates also converted 13 Bluejay turnovers into 17 points and doubled up the visitors 30-15 in bench points.
Creighton returns home to host Butler on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in a game that will be nationally-televised on CBS Sports Network.
