Creighton will face Colorado in the Opening Round
Omaha, Neb. -- Less than two hours after learning the men's team was dancing, Creighton's women's basketball team officially joined the party, earning an at-large bid to the 2022 Women's NCAA Basketball Championship. The tenth-seeded Bluejays will face seventh-seeded Colorado on Friday, March 18th in Iowa City, Iowa. Television coverage and tip times will be announced later tonight.
The women's squad is making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, including the fifth under current head coach Jim Flanery. Creighton's last trip to the Big Dance came in 2018 when the Bluejays defeated Iowa in the opening round, then went on to battle UCLA inside the historic venue of Pauley Pavilion.
The Bluejay team gathered at a public viewing party inside D.J. Sokol Arena on the Creighton campus to watch the bracket be unveiled on ESPN.
Creighton enters the NCAA Tournament with a 20-9 record after finishing in third place in the BIG EAST Conference regular-season standings. This year's club features All-BIG EAST First Team selection Emma Ronsiek (14.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg), All-BIG EAST Second Team selection and BIG EAST Co-Most Improved Player Lauren Jensen (12.3 ppg, 76 3FG) as well as the BIG EAST's Sixth Man of the Year Morgan Maly (12.0 ppg, 71 3FG).
Creighton is coached by Jim Flanery who owns a 376-252 record in 20th year with the Bluejays. This year marks his fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level, including trips to the third-round in 2012, 2013, 2017 and 2018 as Creighton's coach, during each of the Bluejays' last three trips Creighton has won its opening round game.
The winner of Friday's Creighton/Colorado game will meet the winner of the game between second-seeded Iowa and 15th-seeded Illinois State.
