Bluejay WBB Continue Dancing, Down Colorado 84-74

Iowa City, Iowa -- Powered by a combined 52 points from sophomores Morgan Maly, Lauren Jensen and Molly Mogensen, the Creighton women's basketball team moved on to the NCAA Second Round with an 84-74 win over Colorado on Friday, March 18.
The win secured Creighton's (21-9) fourth straight First Round NCAA Tournament victory, while Colorado closes their season with a 22-9 overall record. The Bluejays advance to face regional host Iowa on Sunday, March 20 in Iowa City, Iowa. Game time for Sunday's contest will be determined later this evening.
Creighton battled from behind early as Colorado scored the first seven points of the game and on five of their first six field goal attempts to jump out to a 11-2 lead just three and a half minutes into the game. The Bluejays chipped away at the Buffaloes' advantage with a three-point play from sophomore Emma Ronsiek and a pair of layups from Maly and Jensen to cut the deficit down 17-14 with 1:38 remaining in the opening period. Colorado used a layup by Quay Miller and a jumper from Kindyll Wetta to push the lead back out to seven before a three by Mogensen closed the gap to 21-17 at the end of the first quater.Â
The game turned in Creighton favor in the second quarter with a 15-4 run over the final 5:24. Down 27-21 the Bluejays pulled even with a 6-0 run on a pair of buckets by Maly and a mid-range jumper from Jensen to knot the game at 27-27 (4:26). Colorado counters consecutive field goals, yet the Bluejays' confidence had began to climb. Down 31-27 with just over 90 second remaining, Creighton closed the half with nine straight points. Jensen got the run started with four from the chartity stripe, Ronsiek gave the Bluejays their first lead on a driving layup at 33-31 with 24 seconds left. The South Dakota native alertly stole Colorado's inbounds pass, then found Maly for a trey to send the Bluejays to the locker room with a 36-31 edge.
Colorado hit the court in the third re-invigorated, hitting its first seven shots, but the Bluejays held off the Buffaloes advance by knocking down 6-of-8, highlighted by trifectas from seniors Tatum Rembao and Payton Brotzki. Colorado was able to pull even at 41-41, only to watch a pullup jumper from Brotzki, a layup by Mogensen and Brotzki's three-ball give Creighton a 48-41 lead (5:52). The two teams seesawed back-and-forth, yet three-pointers by Ronsiek and Maly down the stretch gave the Bluejays a 61-53 advantage as the game moved to the fourth.
Colorado mounted an early stampeded in the final frame, getting within two at 63-61 (6:54), only to watch Maly connect for two free-throws and Mogensen knock down a trey and a layup to make it 70-61 (4:01). Mogensen closed the game with nine points in the final frame, helping Creighton keep Colorado at bay.
Maly led Creighton and tied her career-high with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while grabbing a season-high eight rebounds. Three other Bluejays reached double-figures as Jensen and Mogensen each added 16 points apiece and Rosiek contributed 10 points. Creighton finished the game shooting 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field, including a 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from distance. The Bluejays were also efficient from the charity stripe, hitting 18-of-20 (90.0 percent).Â
Colorado's Jaylyn Sherrod led all-scores with 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting, while Mya Hollingshed and Miller added 15 points and 12 points respectfully. The Buffaloes' closed the game shooting 44.1 percent (30-of-68) from the floor.
