Bluejays end regular-season with a 20-10 record
OMAHA, Neb. -- Ryan Kalkbrenner and Ryan Hawkins combined for 34 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Creighton men's basketball team dropped a 65-60 contest to Seton Hall in the final game of the regular-season for both teams.
The Bluejays honored managers Patrick Binish, Joe Devin, Brian Hanna, Jacob Stork and Jack Wolfgram, as well as student-athletes KeyShawn Feazell, Ryan Hawkins and Alex O'Connell following the game as part of Senior Day festivities.
Kalkbrenner and Hawkins each had 17 points, while Kalkbrenner edged Hawkins in the rebound category for the Bluejay team lead, 8-7. Creighton (20-10, 12-7 BIG EAST) shot 38.9 percent for the game and 33.3 percent from three-point range while also sinking 83.3 percent of its 12 free throw attempts
Seton Hall (20-9, 11-8 BIG EAST) was led by 19 points from Jared Rhoden, while Alexis Yetna had 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. The Pirates outscored CU's reserves 38-2 and also owned a 30-20 advantage in the paint.
Creighton led 26-15 after eight minutes before the Pirates rallied to tie the score at 28-all and later take a 31-30 halftime lead when forward Tyrese Samuel splashed a three-pointer on Seton Hall's final shot of the first half.
The teams exchanged leads six times in the second half, with CU taking a 53-49 lead with 8:26 left before the Pirates countered with a 10-0 run to move ahead 59-53 with 4:15 left. The SHU flurry began with three-pointers by Jamir Harris and Yetna to take the lead, and concluded with a pair of pull jumpers by Rhoden.
Creighton rallied to draw within one on a three-pointer by Hawkins with 2:13 left and got a defensive stop, but Kalkbrenner's go-ahead lay-up was blocked by Rhoden, who answered on the other end with a lay-up to put the Pirates up 63-60 with 58.3 to go. O'Connell, who ranks seventh in BIG EAST play in three-pointers made, missed a pair of tying three-pointers before Samuel iced the game with two free throws with 3.2 seconds left for the final margin.
Creighton will be the No. 4 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament Presented by JEEP, and open against fifth-seeded Marquette on FS1 at 1:30 p.m. Central on Thursday, March 10th.
