OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton women's soccer senior Emma Yackley was named as the inaugural Spirit of Laudato Si' Award winner by Creighton University on Friday, April 22.
The award honors students, staff, faculty, or groups that work to develop a culture of sustainability at Creighton in keeping Laudato Si', a 2015 papal encyclical that urges "care for our common home" through environmental stewardship.
Yackly, a medical anthropology major, is scheduled to graduate next spring and was nominated for her with the Creighton University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), where she serves on the executive board and has been a constant source of creative ideas.
During the fall, Yackley organized a pair of "Green Games" during the men's and women's home soccer season, where campus and community organizations promoted sustainability and environmental best practices. She has also worked alongside campus food service provider, Sodexo, and Creighton's Office of Sustainability Programs to introduce compostable products. Yackley also led efforts to provide a sustainable single-use cup for weight rooms and training rooms, while organizing an Athletics Department-wide service project to celebrate Earth Day.
Joining Yackley as an inaugural awardee is Creighton Dining, a partnership between Sodexo, Housing and Auxiliary Services. Creighton Dining was nominated for its work on implementing and maintaining composting in Brandeis and Wareham Court in cooperation with the Office of Sustainability Programs.
The awards will be conferred during the Sustainable Creighton Initiative Forum that will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in the Mike and Josie Harper Center, Hixson-Lied Auditorium.
