OMAHA, Neb. – Junior goalkeeper Morgan Paley made a career-high nine dazzling saves, including one on a PK, to lead the Creighton Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over UConn on Wednesday, Oct. 21 inside Morrison Stadium.
With the win, the Bluejays captured their seventh shutout of the season, climbing to 6-6-3 overall and into fifth place in the BIG EAST standings with a 2-3-2 mark in league play. UConn, meanwhile, fell to 3-4-7 overall and 1-2-3 in BIG EAST action.
The Huskies came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, creating multiple scoring chances in the first 20 minutes of the contest.
UConn's most dangerous scoring opportunity came in the 16th minute (15:53) as they earned a penalty kick on a Bluejay foul in the box by sophomore Olivia Sides. Paley, however, stepped up big once again, making an incredible diving save before smothering a second chance opportunity from Anya Montano to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard. This marked Paley's third PK save of the season, becoming the first Bluejay goalkeeper to stop three penalty kick attempts in a single season since at least 2000.
Creighton fed off of Paley's momentum swinging save, taking a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute (30:20) as freshman Cassidy Horton won a loose ball in the midfield and found junior Anna Bragg at the top of the 18-yard box, where she eluded one UConn defender to her right before slotting her second goal of the season in the top left corner of the goal to give the Jays a 1-0 advantage.
The Bluejays carried their momentum into the second half, adding to their lead in the 64th minute (63:26) when senior Olivia Duray finished off a series of touches from sophomore Taylor Yablonski and Horton for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Leading 2-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining, Paley would fend off multiple shots from UConn attackers down the stretch to preserve her seventh clean sheet.
UConn closed the match with an 18-7 advantage in shots and a 9-0 edge in corners, while Paley collected a career-high nine saves and moved into a tie for fifth on Creighton's single season shutouts list with her seventh shutout of the fall.
Creighton will take a week off before return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Central when the Bluejays take on Georgetown in the nation's capital.
