Induction ceremony will take place in October
CASCADE, Iowa -- Creighton men's basketball head coach Greg McDermott has been announced as part of the Cascade High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022.
The Cascade High School Athletic Hall of Fame was formed by a committee of administrators, coaches, alumni, and supporters in 2019. The Hall of Fame inducted its first class in September of 2021. The 2022 class will be the first to recognize former CHS athletes, administrators, and contributors, and this year's inductees are McDermott, Kerry (Greenwood) Winkel, Jim O'Meara, the late John Sullivan, and Marty Sutherland. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony coinciding with Cascade High School's Homecoming on Saturday, October 8 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Cascade. Inductees will also be invited to take part in several Homecoming activities during the week leading up to the induction ceremony.
It only took a couple of seasons for Greg McDermott to author one of the most successful careers in Cascade basketball history, and he has continued to leave his mark on the game in the years since his time in a Cougar uniform. Despite playing varsity for just two seasons, McDermott set a handful of school records for both scoring and rebounding. To this day, he still holds the marks for points in a game (46) and single season scoring average (25.2).
Following a senior season in which he averaged a double-double, McDermott was named All-State and was the Most Valuable Player of the postseason all-star game put on by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. During the summers, McDermott was a "plus" baseball player for the Cougars, collecting two varsity letters, batting better than .300, and putting together an impressive .978 fielding average at first base while helping lead Cascade to the State Baseball Tournament for the first time in 1982.
After graduating from Cascade, McDermott played basketball collegiately for the University of Northern Iowa, where he scored more than 1,000 career points. After playing professionally in Switzerland for a season, McDermott took up coaching. He became a head coach for the first time in 1994 and eventually returned to UNI, where he led the Panthers to three NCAA Tournament berths. He is now the head coach at Creighton, a program he has led to the Big Dance on seven occasions. He has amassed more than 500 career coaching victories and maintains a career winning percentage in the mid-60s.
McDermott is already a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, UNI, and Wayne State University Halls of Fame.
