Bluejays forced a trio of three-set matches during singles play
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton men's tennis team fell 7-0 to Drake on Saturday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 7-9, while Drake improved to 10-10 on the year.
Drake started Saturday's match with a 6-3 and 6-4 victory at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to earn the first point of the day.
The Bulldogs continued to control the match with straight-set victories at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 single slots to clinch the match.
Creighton forced three sets at each of the remaining positions but were unable to come out on top. Jose Oscar Diaz battled back from a 6-1 first set loss for a 6-3 win in the second. Diaz, however, dropped the third set 6-3 at the No. 3 position as Drake took a 5-0 lead in the match. At the No. 2 slot, Shin Inoue rallied from a 6-3 setback in the opening frame for a 6-4 triumph in the second frame before falling in the decisive third set 6-4. During the No. 6 match, Zack Maline dropped the first set 7-6 after falling in the tiebreaker 7-2. Maline recovered for a 7-5 second set win but fell in the third set 10-5 in a 10-point tiebreaker.
"This was a competitive match against a really good team," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We had three matches go the distance so it's disappointing that we weren't able to win any of them, but U like how we competed for the most part. We're looking forward to senior day next Friday and then conference."
The Bluejays wrap up the regular season next Friday when they play host to Doane. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
