Teams will battle in Austin on Dec. 1
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team will play the University of Texas on Thursday, Dec. 1 in the Big 12 - BIG EAST Battle. The game will take place at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, a $375 million arena that opened in April.
The matchups, which will be played in late November and early December, were jointly determined by the two conferences. Broadcast arrangements for the games will be determined by the national television rights holder of the home team, which is FOX Sports for the BIG EAST and ESPN for the Big 12. The 2022-23 season will mark the final year of the four-year agreement between the two conferences, with an equal number of games played in each conference's home market each year.
Creighton is 1-2 all-time in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. The Bluejays defeated Oklahoma (83-73) in Omaha in 2019 before falling to No. 5 Kansas (73-72) in Lawrence in 2020. Last year CU lost a 65-58 game to No. 18 Iowa State in Omaha.
The Longhorns are 0-3 in the event, losing 70-48 at Providence in 2019, 68-64 to No. 12 Villanova in Austin in 2020 and dropping a 64-60 decision at No. 23 Seton Hall in 2021.
The BIG EAST has won 16-of-26 games in the conference challenge series over the previous three campaigns, though the leagues split 10 contests a year ago and six games in 2020-21.
Creighton finished the 2021-22 season with a 23-12 record, advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bluejays are scheduled to return three starters to the court in 2022-23 for head coach Greg McDermott.
Texas returns its top two scorers from its 2021-22 squad that finished 22-12 overall and lost to Purdue in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Chris Beard's squad also features former Bluejay center Christian Bishop, who started every game and averaged 11.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for Creighton's 2020-21 team that reached the Sweet 16.
Creighton is 1-0 all-time against the Longhorns, winning a 77-61 game on March 9, 1974 in the First Round of an NCAA Tournament game contested in Denton, Texas.
