Summit League Player of the Year led South Dakota State to 30 wins in 2021-22
OMAHA, Neb. – Baylor Scheierman, the 2022 Summit League Player of the Year, has announced he will transfer from South Dakota State to join the Creighton men's basketball program.
Scheierman has two years of collegiate eligibility remaining but has also applied for the 2022 NBA Draft. The early entry withdrawal deadline for underclassmen that wish to maintain their collegiate eligibility is June 1st.
"We are thrilled to add Baylor to our program," said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. "His versatility and ability to score on all three levels will be a great addition to our roster. In addition to being a high-level scorer, he is also an elite passer. His skillset will fit perfectly in our fast-paced, unselfish system."
The Aurora, Neb., native returns to his home state after three decorated seasons at South Dakota State. The 6-foot-6, 205 pound guard was a two-time Summit League First Team honoree and was the only player in the country to lead his conference in rebounds and assists last season.
He averaged 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest for the Jackrabbits in 2021-22, who finished 30-6 overall and a perfect 18-0 in Summit League play. He also ranked in the top-10 in the Summit League in assist/turnover ratio (1st), defensive rebounds per game (1st), steals per game (3rd), field goal percentage (3rd), three-pointers per game (5th), points per game (5th), minutes per game (6th) and free throw percentage (7th).
Scheierman was a NABC District 12 First Team pick and a finalist for the Lou Henson Award in 2022. He owns four career Summit League Player of the Week honors and 24 career double-doubles, which ranks second in SDSU history to Mike Daum.
Scheierman started all 23 games for SDSU in 2020-21, collecting 11 double-doubles and ranking third nationally with 8.65 defensive rebounds per game. He led the Jackrabbits in points (355), assists (91), rebounds (212) and steals (24) and became one of seven players nationally in the past 20 years to average at least 15.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game for an entire season.
That followed his debut year when he averaged 6.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in 2019-20.
In 90 career games at the college level, Scheierman has accumulated 1,114 points, 635 rebounds, 320 assists and 83 steals while shooting 41.4 percent from three-point range.
Ranked No. 4 in ESPN's transfer rankings, he chose Creighton over Arkansas, Clemson, Duke and Nebraska.
Creighton finished the 2021-22 season with a 23-12 record, falling 79-72 to eventual national champion Kansas in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bluejays are scheduled to return three starters, including BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner and BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Ryan Nembhard, to the court in 2022-23. Scheierman will join fellow Bluejay newcomers Francisco Farabello, Jasen Green, Fredrick King and Ben Shtolzberg to the program.
