Norah Sis has three digs and a kill in title match
BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR, Mexico - Creighton All-American Norah Sis helped the USA Volleyball Under-21 National Team to a Gold Medal on Sunday night at the Pan American Cup. The American side defeated Argentina for the second time in four days -- both in four sets -- with Sunday's victory coming by a 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14 margin.
The Americans led 5-4 in the first set when Sis recorded her first block of the match. The US would not trail again in the set and closed out the frame on Sis' lone kill of the evening. Sis had two digs, one kill and one block in the opener.
The rising Bluejay sophomore was replaced midway through the second set as Argentina evened the match with a 25-21 victory. The Bluejay picked up one dig in the second set before giving way to incoming Minnesota freshman McKenna Wucherer with the Americans down 12-8 and did not play again.
The third set saw the US fall behind 5-0 and trail for much of the set. USA took its first lead at 20-19 on a block by Rebekah Allick and won the set 25-22. The United States never trailed in the fourth set, winning for the fifth time in as many matches for the week.
Florida's Merritt Beason led the United States with 14 kills and three blocks in the title match.
Sis started all five of Team USA's matches, collecting a combined 30 kills, 24 digs, four blocks and three aces on .286 hitting for the week.
The Pan American Cup is a qualifier for the 2023 FIVB U21 World Championship, with Argentina and United States earning those bids by virtue of Saturday's semifinal victories. Ten teams competed in three pools to begin the tournament. The United States shared Pool C with Argentina, Canada and Costa Rica. Pool A included Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico while Pool B held Mexico, Chile and Honduras.
Sis led Creighton last fall with 3.75 kills per set and her 435 kills were 106 more than any other freshman on a top-25 team. The Papillion, Neb., product was named to four different All-Tournament Teams and brought home MVP honors at the BIG EAST Tournament. The outside hitter was named AVCA Third Team All-American, AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year, AVCA All-East Region, BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, picked up six BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades and also landed on the All-BIG EAST Team. She averaged 4.43 kills per set and 3.36 digs per set on .260 hitting in eight contests against top-50 opponents. She was named VolleyballMag.com's National Freshman of the Year after helping Creighton to a 31-4 overall record and BIG EAST Tournament and regular-season titles.
