CU leads the state's Division I Universities with nine perfect APR scores
OMAHA, Neb. -- Nine Creighton programs were recognized by the NCAA for having perfect multi-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores in their respective sports. Creighton's men's golf, men's tennis, softball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, rowing, women's tennis and volleyball teams each were honored.
Creighton's nine perfect scores led the state's Division I Universities and trailed only Villanova (11) among its BIG EAST peers. No league school owned a higher percentage of teams with a perfect APR score than Creighton's 64.3 percent.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The public announcement of APRs returned on Tuesday after a one-year hiatus. This spring, the Division I Board of Directors approved the continual suspension of APR penalties for an additional year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, it supported the public release of the APR data.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked. The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.
Both the Creighton women's tennis and women's cross country teams earned a perfect rate for the 12th time In the 16-year history of the announcement of APR scores. it was the 10th consecutive perfect score for women's tennis and sixth in a row by the women's cross country team. Bluejay women's basketball was honored for the 10th overall time and eighth straight listing, while men's tennis picked up its ninth accolade but first since 2015-16. The women's golf program also owns nine all-time APR scores of 1000, including the last five recognitions. CU men's golf landed its eighth honor but first since 2014-15, while softball got its second perfect score to match its previous best first done in 2014-15. The volleyball team earned its seventh overall score of 1000 and the rowing program had its first perfect score since 2011-12 to picked up its second perfect score ever.
The current multi-year APR scores for Creighton's teams (2017-18 to 2020-21) is as follows: volleyball 1,000; women's tennis 1,000; women's soccer 992; rowing 1,000; women's golf 1,000; women's cross country 1,000; women's basketball 1,000; softball 1,000; men's tennis 1,000; men's soccer 992; men's golf 1,000; men's cross country 995; men's basketball 990 and baseball 972.
"The APR data continues to demonstrate the high level of academic achievement of our student-athletes and teams, and their resiliency to excel through a global pandemic and instability in the intercollegiate landscape," said Division I Committee on Academics chair Dianne Harrison, president emerita at California State University, Northridge. "The APR has been and continues to be a valuable real-time tool that provides us with an opportunity to identify and work with schools that may need additional assistance to improve their academic support services. Overall, the Academic Performance Program furthers the NCAA's commitment to academic excellence and integrity and the public release of this APR data while penalties are suspended is a reasonable interim step."
The minimum APR academic standard for each team is 930. Typically, teams that scored below the benchmark would have to face penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics. However, due to the current penalty suspension in place, teams will not be subjected to penalties this year. Last year, APR data was not released publicly, and penalties were not assessed.
Creighton's student-athletes owned a 3.42 cumulative GPA following the end of the 2021-22 academic year.
