NRG Media stations will carry games from six sports for the next three years.
OMAHA, Neb. – The radio rights for Creighton Athletics will remain with NRG Media and feature expanded coverage across six sports, it was announced on Wednesday, Aug. 24. NRG Media, which has carried Bluejay men's basketball games since 2013, added three years to its deal that will now run through the 2024-25 school year.
"NRG has been a tremendous partner with Creighton Athletics and we are thrilled to continue this deal," said McCormick Endowed Athletic Director Marcus Blossom. "We truly value the long-term relationship we have had with NRG and look forward to the expansion of coverage with additional sports on NRG's radio stations. Also, having all of our men's basketball games now available on 101.9 FM expands the radio footprint in Omaha for our fans."
"We are extremely excited to continue our partnership with Creighton University and the Athletic Department. Creighton is an amazing university with a great athletic program, and we are thrilled to be associated with the University. We truly look forward to growing our partnership in the coming years," said Mark Shecterle, Market Manager of NRG Radio Omaha.
The new deal will see six Bluejay sports covered by NRG Media, which are detailed below:
For the first time, all men's basketball games will air on both 1620 The Zone and 101.9 FM The Keg. Previously 101.9 FM had only aired Bluejay home games. The stations will have exclusive rights to broadcast play-by-play for all home and away games, as well as pre-game and post-game coverage. 1620 The Zone's afternoon talk-show host John Bishop will continue to handle play-by-play duties.
All Creighton baseball home games and local road games will be aired on either 1180 The Zone, News Talk 1290 AM or 1620 The Zone as part of the new deal.
A to-be-determined number of women's basketball games will be broadcast on 1180 The Zone or News Talk 1290. Head coach Jim Flanery's 2021-22 team reached the Elite Eight and its top three scorers were sophomores a year ago.
Beginning with Thursday's regular-season opener, all men's soccer home games will be broadcast both in Spanish on La Nueva 1020 AM and in English on either 1180 The Zone or News Talk 1290. A minimum of three women's soccer home games will also be carried on either 1180 The Zone or News Talk 1290 AM as part of the agreement.
Eight-time defending BIG EAST champion Creighton Volleyball returns to the radio airwaves, as well, with home matches airing on either 1180 The Zone or News Talk 1290 if there aren't conflicts with other events. The first home broadcast will come on Sept. 3 when No. 11 Kentucky visits D.J. Sokol Arena to take on No. 18 Creighton at 10:30 a.m. Creighton's Sept. 10 match at Omaha will also be carried on radio next month.
The coverage doesn't stop with the events listed above, as the weekly Creighton Athletics Hour will continue to air on 1620 The Zone. Additionally, a new weekly podcast covering Creighton Athletics will debut later this year.
1620 The Zone features nationally award-winning talent including Gary Sharp and Damon Benning who co-host "Sharp and Benning in the Mornings" airing weekdays from 6 a.m., to 10 a.m., the Connor Happer Show from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., and John Bishop and Josh Peterson who co-host the long-running sports talk show "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" airing weekdays from 2 p.m., to 6 p.m. All programming, including Creighton broadcasts, can be heard online at www.1620thezone.com and on the 1620 The Zone smartphone app.
