Norah Sis leads the way with 17 kills and 10 digs
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The No. 18 Creighton Volleyball team opened its 2022 season with a 3-0 win over Iowa State to begin play at the Rumble in the Rockies in Laramie, Wyo.
Scores of CU's win were 25-21, 25-20, 25-22.
Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Norah Sis led Creighton with 17 kills and 10 digs and Keeley Davis added 10 kills. Four women made their debut in a Bluejay uniform, including freshman starter Sky McCune and grad transfer Allison Whitten at libero, as the newcomers combined for nine kills and 17 digs. Creighton hit .276 and finished with 50 kills, four aces, 41 digs and three blocks as a team.
The Cyclones were paced by 12 kills from freshman Maya Duckworth. Three-time All-Big 12 performer Eleanor Holthaus contributed 11 kills on .450 hitting, with seven of those kills coming in the final frame. ISU had 34 kills, two aces, 33 digs and 10 blocks on .220 hitting.
Davis had six kills and an ace in the first set as Creighton pulled away late in its 25-21 win. Back-to-back kills from Sis gave Creighton a 16-14 lead and newcomer Jazz Schmidt earned a block and kill on consecutive points to push the Bluejay lead to 20-15. ISU would creep within two points at 23-21 before slams from Davis and Sis closed out the frame.
Iowa State rolled to a 6-1 lead early in the second set before CU rallied. Sis put down four straight kills to help CU take the lead for good at 15-13. Kiana Schmitt produced kills on two of the final three points to close out the 25-20 victory as the Jays took a commanding 2-0 lead into intermission. Sis had seven kills in the game and Kiara Reinhardt contributed an ace and a solo block in her return to the floor after missing all of last season due to injury.
CU never trailed in the third set as the serving of Davis and Ellie Bolton helped stake the Bluejays to an 8-1 lead it would never surrender. Fittingly, the match ended on back-to-back kills from Sis.
Creighton is back in action tonight at 6 p.m. when it meets Wichita State.
