Scouting Creighton (1-0-0)
Coming off a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2021, the Bluejays have a renewed energy within the program. Eight starters from a squad that upset #10 Missouri State in the opening round return, while 23 letterwinners from last season are back in Omaha.
Headlining the returners are captains Paul Kruse and Mark O'Neil. A fifth-year senior in goal, Kruse brings 50 matches of experience and better than 4,600 minutes in the net for the Bluejays. O'Neil will anchor the back line for the Bluejays after logging 1,298 minutes last season.
The Creighton offense showed tremendous promise with a 6-0 win over Oakland to open the season. The last time a Bluejay squad scored at least six goals was against Drake on Oct. 10, 2017 in a 6-1 victory.
Scouting Rutgers (1-0-0)
The Scarlet Knights open the 2022 season with a pair of matches in Omaha, facing the Mavericks on Thursday, a 4-2 win, before making their way to Morrison Stadium on Sunday.
Rutgers closed the 2021 season 9-6-2 with a 3-4-1 mark in Big Ten play. There were two common opponents with Creighton in 2021. The first was Indiana as Creighton bested the Hoosiers as the No. 1 team on Sept. 3 (3-0), Rutgers posted a 2-1 win over Indiana on Sept. 17. The other shared foe was Connecticut. Rutgers fell to the Huskies in Storrs 4-2 on Oct. 27, while the Bluejays posted a 2-2 tie at Connecticut on Oct. 16.
Rutgers returns its top four scorers from last season, led by 14 points from Jackson Temple. The leader in assists was Thomas DeVizio with five, who is also back for Rutgers. In the win over Omaha on Thursday it was two goals from MD Myers and three points on a goal and an assist from Pablo Avila.
McGuire Sets Morrison Stadium with Seven Points Against Oakland
Creighton junior Duncan McGuire delivered a career night in the Bluejays' 6-0 season opening win over Oakland on Aug. 25. McGuire became the first Bluejay since Riggs Lennon (Sept. 24, 2016) to deliver a hat trick.
The goals alone tied a Morrison Stadium record for points, but McGuire's evening began with an assist. The combined seven points set a new facility mark, surpassing a quartet of Bluejays with six points (Ethan Finlay, Byron Dacy, Julian Nash and Brian Biggerstaff).
Bluejays' Six Goal Explosion Is the Second Highest Total in a Season Opener
Creighton's six goal season opening win over Oakland marked the second highest output. The only match that saw the Bluejays score more goals was in 1992 as Creighton bested Kansas City 9-0 in 1992 on Sept. 5.
The six-goal performance also equalled the Morrison Stadium record for goals in a single match. Thursday marked the fourth time the Bluejays scored six times in one Morrison Stadium contest.
