Scouting Seton Hall (13-4, 6-1 BIG EAST)
Arguably the hottest team in the BIG EAST, Seton Hall has won 11 of its last 12 games. The Pirates only loss came to Connecticut on Dec. 21.
Senior Lauren Park-Lane leads the Pirates with an impressive 20.5 ppg this season. Joining Park-Lane to create a dynamic duo Sidney Cooks brings 15.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg.
Much more than a two-woman team, Seton Hall also is getting 10.6 ppg from Sha'Lynn Hagans, who
delivered 22 points in a 76-60 win over Providence on Sunday. Â
Weaving in seven new players the Pirates dropped three straight games early this season to Princeton, Columbia and VCU. The last loss in that string came on Nov. 25. Since that game the Pirates have been decisively better than virtually every opponent.
Scouting Creighton (10-5, 4-3 BIG EAST)
Unranked for the first time this season, the Bluejays looked impressive in a 68-42 win over Marquette on Jan. 8.
The last four games have been a roller coaster with lackluster performances against #8 Connecticut (Dec. 28) and Providence (Jan. 4) and impressive games at DePaul (Dec. 31) and Marquette (Jan. 8).
The win over Marquette was easily the most impressive defensive showing of the season, holding the Golden Eagles to just 42 points.
Juniors Lauren Jensen, Morgan Maly and Emma Ronsiek have guided Creighton as the trio have led Creighton in scoring in 13 games of the Bluejays' 15 games this season.
Jensen averages 16.7 ppg, while Maly brings 16.5 ppg. Ronsiek rounds out the Bluejays averaging double-figures with 12.5 ppg.
Keys To the Game on Wednesday, January 11
Managing Emotions: The Pirates and Bluejays have built a rivalry that gained added heat last season with three meetings. The emotion of the game will undoubtedly play a roll.
Defensive Intensity: The Bluejays' effort on the defensive end against Marquette was impressive. Creighton will need to bring that level to send the Pirates packing.
Slowing Cooks and Park-Lane: Seton Hall will certainly try to pound the ball inside to Cooks. While Creighton must deny those easy looks, the Bluejays also have to be wary of Park-Lane getting hot with easy looks.
Bluejays and Pirates Offer Opposing Approaches
While Creighton and Seton Hall have each been highly successful over the past 10 season, the two programs go about building its roster in very different ways.
Creighton has brought in three transfers (Lauren Jensen, Brooke Kissinger and Morgan Turner) in more than a decade.
Seton Hall, by contrast, has eight of the 13 players on its current roster that came to South Orange after starting their collegiate career elsewhere.
Bluejays Have Habit of Holding Marquette Down
For the second consecutive season Creighton limited the Golden Eagles to under 50 points in Marquette's trip to Omaha. The Golden Eagles mustered 42 points in the 68-42 battle with Creighton on Jan. 8, 2023. Last season the Bluejays held Marquette to 45 points in a 62-45 win over the Golden Eagles on Jan. 7, 2022.
The 42 points allowed is the lowest figure since Creighton limited Georgetown to 38 points (a 64-38 victory) on Dec. 3, 2021.
Earlier Tips (6:00 p.m.) Bring Meal Deals
After moving weekday start times to 6:00 p.m. for the 2022-23 season, the Bluejays are looking to help families with meal deals at the concession stands.
Beginning against Seton Hall, Creighton concessions will offer $5 combos that will include Hot dog, Souvenir drink, and bag of chips.
