Bluejays defeat third top-25 team of the season
OMAHA, Neb. -- After seeing its 16-point second half lead erased in a span of 10 minutes, Creighton bounced back with a game-ending 17-11 run and held off No. 19 Providence to pick up its third top-25 win of the winter with a 73-67 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Playing its nation-leading seventh top-25 team this season, but first at home, Creighton snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in BIG EAST action. Providence fell to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in BIG EAST play, as its longest winning streak (9) since 1988-89 was snapped in front of a sold out crowd of 17,443.
Ryan Kalkbrenner (21), Trey Alexander (20) and Baylor Scheierman (19) combined for 60 of CU's 73 points.
Bryce Hopkins (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Ed Croswell (10 points, 10 rebounds) contributed double-doubles for Providence.
The teams were tied at 21 after 12 minutes before a Scheierman three-pointer started an 18-4 run. The Bluejay senior had seven points while Alexander chipped in with seven more to help the lead balloon to 39-25. Paced by 17 points from Scheierman on 7-of-11 shooting, the Bluejays led 41-29 at the half.
Scheierman's second dunk of the season gave CU its largest lead of the day at 85-29 with 18 minutes to play before the defending BIG EAST regular-season champions made their move. Six points in 62 seconds trimmed the Friar deficit to 45-35 after a three-point play by Hopkins. An Alexander lay-up stopped the Bluejay drought temporarily before another 9-1 PC flurry narrowed the gap to 48-44 with 13:05 to play. Hopkins tied the game at 54 on a three-point basket with 8:30 left.
The Bluejays came out of the under-8 media timeout with Scheierman returning to the game with four fouls and Kalkbrenner after a short breather of less than two minutes. Arthur Kaluma made back-to-back lay-ups to give CU the lead for good and Kalkbrenner added two foul shots to push the CU lead to 62-56 with five minutes left. Providence never got closer than four in the final five minutes as Alexander was 6-for-6 at the line down the stretch and Kaluma's lay-in with 55.7 left gave CU a three-score cushion.
Despite being outrebounded 44-29 for the game and 20-8 in second chance points, Creighton outscored PC 46-32 in the paint. CU also owned a 10-2 advantage in transition points.
Kalkbrenner and Scheierman shared the team lead with seven rebounds while Kalkbrenner also swatted four shots. The Bluejays shot 48.1 percent from the floor, 18.8 percent from deep and 78.3 percent at the line while dishing 13 assists against just four turnovers.
Providence had four starters finish with four personal fouls and the backcourt trio of Alyn Breed, Noah Locke and Devin Carter combined to shoot 12-for-36 from the field and 3-of-14 from downtown. PC shot 38.5 percent overall, 21.1 percent from deep and 86.7 percent at the line.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. Central game at Butler that will air on FS1, 1620 AM and 101.9 FM.
