STILLWATER, Okla. – Matthew Lanahan and Alejandro Gandini paired up for a first-round doubles victory as the Creighton men's tennis team opened play at the ITA Central Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State, on Wednesday afternoon.
Lanahan and Gandini advanced to Thursday's round of 32 with an 8-6 win over Oral Robert's Gustavo Pinho and Ricardo Filho.
Gandini also won his first-round singles match, taking down Pinho in three-sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, before falling to New Mexico's Rafael AbdulSalam in three-sets. After dropping the first set to AbdulSalam, 6-4, Gandini rallied to win set two, 7-6 (9-7). AbdulSalam, however, won the third set 6-3 to claim the victory.
Sophomore Zachary Kuo took down Omaha's Bryan Kuntz, 7-5, 6-4, in his first match of the day, but suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback to Drake's Jeremy Schifris in the singles round of 64 to end his day.
Fellow sophomore Kirtan Patel captured a 7-5, 6-3 win over New Mexico's Daniil Kakhniuk in his first match of the day, before being forced to retire in the third set of his second match due to injury. Patel won his opening set against Nebraska's Nic Wiedenhorn, 7-6 (7-4), but dropped the second set 7-5. It was all tied up at 2-games apiece in the third set before Patel was forced to retire due to an injury.
"Today was a brutal day and I feel terrible for our team," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "They fought extremely hard, and two of our three second round singles matches were severely hampered by cramps, with Kirtan even having to retire in the third set due to injury. These guys left their hearts on the court today playing for Creighton."
Lanahan and Gandini will face Oklahoma's seeded pair of Nathan Han and Baptiste Anselmo on Thursday afternoon.
