STILLWATER, Okla. – Senior Matthew Lanahan and junior Alejandro Gandini pulled out a pair of upsets to advance to the Main Doubles Quarterfinals at the ITA Central Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State, on Thursday.
Gandini and Lanahan opened the day by taking down Oklahoma's No. 2 ranked doubles pair of Nathan Han and Baptiste Anselmo, 8-3, to advance to the round of 16.
In the round of 16, the tandem pulled off their second upset victory of the day, taking down Oklahoma State's Leighton Allen and Carl Roothman, 8-5, advancing to the quarterfinal round on Friday.
In singles action, Lanahan recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nebraska's Lars Johann, while Ethan Neil claimed a 6-1, 1-6, 10-6 three-set win over North Dakota's Jayho Hong in the consolation round of 64.
"The guys showed some real strength today," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "Our relatively small, mid-major university took on teams like Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State today and walked away victorious. We have every desire to build on this major boost to our belief in ourselves."
The Bluejays return to the court on Friday for a pair of singles rounds, while Gandini and Lanahan will take on Wichita State's fifth seeded Kristof Minarik and Alejandro Jacome at 5 p.m. in the doubles quarterfinals.
