Senior middle blocker averaged league-high 1.67 blocks per set last weekend
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball middle blocker Kiana Schmitt has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after helping Creighton to a pair of 3-0 sweeps last weekend. It's the third time in her career that the senior has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, having also been honored twice last season.
Schmitt led CU with 3.50 kills per set, 1.67 blocks per set and .528 hitting against St. John's and Seton Hall. Her hitting percentage (.528) and blocks per set (1.67) both led all league players during the week.
Â
Schmitt had eight kills on .316 hitting while leading all players with six blocks in Friday's 3-0 win over St. John's. Her work helped hold SJU to a hitting percentage below .000 in two of the three sets.
Â
The Waunakee, Wis., product then owned 13 kills in 17 errorless swings, hitting .765, while adding a match-best four blocks in a 3-0 victory over Seton Hall in which the Pirates hit just .045. Schmitt's .765 hitting percentage ranks fourth-best in CU history (min. 12 kills).
Â
Ranked 16th nationally, Creighton (12-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) takes on preseason BIG EAST favorite Marquette (8-7, 4-0 BIG EAST) on Friday at 7 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast on FloSports.
