Bluejays improve to 16-4 after 20 matches
STORRS, Conn. -- The No. 15 Creighton Volleyball team posted its fourth consecutive sweep with a straight sets victory at Connecticut on Friday, Oct. 20th. Scores of the Bluejay victory were 25-12, 25-21, 25-13.
Creighton improved to 16-4 on the season and reached the midway point of league play with a 7-2 record despite missing several key pieces of their regular rotation once again.
"I thought it was a really good night tonight considering that we were putting a new line-up in on Thursday with some additional injuries this week," said head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "It's been a rough couple weeks...but we talked about our depth and people are stepping up when given the opportunities. For a kid like Katie Maser, who's really never had significant time in the fall, to see her play and do such a great job and have such composure was wonderful to see."
Creighton hit .607 in the first set, compiling 17 kills on 28 errorless swings to set the tone in the match. Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Norah Sis made her return to the front row a success with five kills in 10 swings during the opener. Down the stretch, Bluejay senior Ellie Bichelmeyer had back-to-back kills to close out the set. Kendra Wait had a dozen assists and three digs while directing the Bluejay offense.
The second set included six lead changes and seven ties before CU pulled away down the stretch. The Bluejays trailed 17-16 before a kill from Kiara Reinhardt started a 9-4 run to end the frame. Norah Sis finished off the Huskies with a kill on set point.
Sis served a 9-0 run early in the third set to boost the Bluejays to a 10-2 lead and the Huskies never threatened. The junior All-American added seven kills in eight swings in the finale, while Kiana Schmitt contributed four blocks. The Huskies hit -.071 in 28 swings during the final game, managing just four kills.
Playing front row for the first time since September 3rd, Sis hit .406 led all Bluejays with 15 kills and 11 digs. Ava Martin was just as potent, hitting .417 and closing the day with 11 kills and six digs. Reinhardt had seven kills on .667 hitting, while Schmitt added seven kills and led all players with seven blocks. Wait finished the contest with 30 assists and nine digs, while Sky McCune also recorded nine digs while serving as CU's libero for the first time. Overall Creighton hit .396 and had 49 kills, three aces, eight blocks and 49 digs.
UConn fell to 7-15 and 2-7 in BIG EAST action, snapping a two-match win streak. Emma Werkmeister led the Huskies with 10 kills. The Huskies mustered 27 kills, four aces, 38 digs and two blocks on .097 hitting.
