Senior is in the running for best point guard of the year
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (October 23, 2023) — The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Creighton's Steven Ashworth is one of 20 candidates on the watch list for the 2024 Bob Cousy Award.
Named after Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor, now in its 21st year, recognizes the top point guard in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
"The point guards that have been named to the 2024 Bob Cousy Award Watch List truly embody the skills and characteristics that made Bob Cousy the 'Houdini of the Hardwood,'" said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. "We look forward to watching their leadership and playmaking abilities take center stage and working alongside Bob Cousy and the selection committee to narrow down the watch list throughout the season."
A senior from Alpine, Utah, Ashworth brings lofty credentials to Creighton after playing the past three seasons at Utah State. Ashworth was named USBWA District VII Player of the Year last season, and First Team All-Mountain West at Utah State last season. He averaged 16.2 points, 4.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 43.4 percent from three-point range and 87.8 percent at the line. Ashworth finished sixth in the country in three-point percentage, ninth with 111 three-pointers made, 15th with 3.17 three-pointers per game and 29th in free-throw percentage, leading the Mountain West in each category.
