How Sweet It Is!! Lanahan and Gandini Soar Into Round of 16 With Straight-Set Victory At ITA National Fall Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Creighton Men's Tennis senior Matthew Lanahan and junior Alejandro Gandini advanced to the Round of 16 of the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, Calif. on Wednesday afternoon.
The dynamic duo advanced to Sweet 16 after picking up a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) straight-sets win over Old Dominion's Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland De Ravel. With the win, Lanahan and Gandini advance to play TCU's Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted in the Round of 16 on Thursday afternoon.
Lanahan and Gandini soared out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before Cadonau and Rolland De Ravel rallied to even the match at 4-4. The Bluejay duo would answer with a pair of game winners to regain the lead before finishing off the first set with a 7-5 victory.
In set two, ODU's Cadonau and Rolland De Ravel jumped out to a 2-0 and 4-2 lead, before Lanahan and Gandini responded with three straight game-winners to take a 5-4 advantage. Cadonau and Rolland De Ravel answered with a game-winners of their own to even the match at 5-5 before forcing a tiebreaker at 6-6. Lanahan and Gandini fell behind 3-1 early but regrouped and won five straight points to take a 5-3 lead on the way to a 7-5 tiebreaker victory.
"Matthew and Alejandro continue to make history for Creighton," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "They showed some of their strengths today, but said they can still play much better and that's what they'll focus on in the next round."
